An offensive putback by
Dayvantia Campbell early in the second half gave Murray State a brief lead, but nationally second-ranked South Plains College flexed its muscle down the stretch for a 72-55 win over the Aggies Monday night in Enid, Oklahoma.
Murray State posted a defensive gem in the first half against the high-scoring Texans, limiting the highly-rated foe to just 26 points but still trailed by three at intermission.
The Aggies continued to battle toe-to-toe while finally grabbing a 32-31 edge on the bucket by Campbell with just over three minutes gone. It was a short-lived edge however as South Plains answered with a three-pointer that ignited a big run for a double-digit advantage. The Texans then pulled away from there for the final margin.
Isaiah Lewis was the lone Aggie to reach double figures with 12 points, but they had solid balance down the board as six players all contributed at least six points.
Ezekiel Williamsonbey chipped in eight, R.J. Chatman and
Stanley Harley both tallied seven with Campbell and
Ignas Juskevicius adding six apiece.
Jackson Lawley pitched in four,
Treyvaughn Williams had three with
Tarrance Austin rounding things out with two.
The 2-2 Aggies will be in action Saturday at 4 p.m. when they return home to tangle with Paris Junior College in a 4 p.m. tipoff inside Beames Fieldhouse.
