A four-point lead with just under four minutes remaining slipped away as the Murray State Aggies went cold from the field in a 66-62 road loss at Neosho County Community College on Tuesday.
Coach Josh Davis' club held a 55-51 edge following an
Isaiah Lewis runner in the lane with 3:43 left but connected on only two of their final 11 field goal attempts as the host Panthers closed the contest on a 15-7 run for the victory.
Stanley Harley's reverse layup putback narrowed the gap to 60-57 with 58 seconds to play and the sophomore spark plug drained a three pointer from the left corner moments later that narrowed the gap to just two points.
Neosho was money at the charity stripe to ice the win however, sinking four straight to hold Murray State at bay. The Panthers ended a perfect nine for nine in the second half.
The game was knotted at 29 following a physical, back-and-forth opening half but the Aggies appeared to be taking command following back-to-back treys from Lewis and
Tarrance Austin midway through the half. Neosho answered to tie it up again at 46 as Murray State went scoreless.
Harley broke the drought with a three pointer from the deep right corner, igniting a 7-0 Aggie burst but that 53-46 cushion slowly slipped away.
Murray State tallied 11 three pointers, but only two of those from Harley came in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Lewis led four Aggies in double digits with 17 points, including three treys. Harley scored 12, R.J. Chatman had 11 (canning three treys) and
Ignas Juskevicius tallied 10 points as well.
Rustin Coffey posted eight points, Austin finished with five and
Ezekiel Williamsonbey tossed in two.
The Aggies, who leveled at 4-4 on the season, continue their four-game road swing on Sunday at Paris Junior College with a 5 p.m. tipoff.
