Grayson College got off to a red-hot offensive start and the Murray State men could never fully recover in an 80-71 non-conference loss for the Aggies Saturday inside Beames Fieldhouse.
The defeat drops the Aggies to 6-8 on the season as they will be back home on Monday, December 12 for a 4 p.m. date with Ranger College in the final action before the Christmas break.
Murray State connected on eight first half three-pointers, including a perfect 4-for-4 from
Ridley Shema, on the way to 40 points before halftime, but the visiting Vikings were even hotter. Grayson sank seven treys but also utilized a 15 for 19 effort at the free throw line to build a 48-40 cushion at intermission.
A.J. Williams did the bulk of the damage for Grayson in the first half, hitting five three-pointers on the way to 24 points before being limited to 10 after the break.
The Aggies narrowed the gap on multiple occasions during the second half but could never take the lead as their shooting cooled.
For the game, Murray State hit 12 of 35 on three-pointers (34 percent) but only managed to hit three of only eight free throws as Grayson scored 21 from the charity stripe.
Shema ended as the game's leading scorer with 14 points off the bench while
Freddie Cooper also hit double figures with 10 as well as six assists.
Nine other Aggies aided in the scoring with
Tarrance Austin and A.J. Richard posting nine points apiece, T.J. Gardner scored eight, K.J. Boone had five with
Kameron Johnson,
Kyle Tolbert and
Jaelen Tucker all notching four points.
Cordrayius Graham and
Stanley Harley both added two.
