Murray State Sports Information
Second-ranked Murray State rolled to another game one victory but had to battle through its first nail biter in a month to sweep National Park College in Region 2 softball action Tuesday in Tishomingo.
Coach Aaron Mullens' unit opened things up late to cruise by the Nighthawks, 9-0, in the opener but needed a strong effort from standout
Bradi Harman both starting and relieving for a 3-2 victory in the second contest.
The Lady Aggie win streak reached 15 straight while improving to 35-1 on the year and a perfect 12-0 in league play. They'll be back on the road for a conference twinbill at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain on Thursday.
Staff ace
Isabella Hardeman dominated the Nighthawks in the first game, yielding only two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks over five stellar innings.
Murray State jumped in front with three tallies in the opening frame which proved more than enough.
Brylee Fanning walked ahead of three straight singles from
Haili Igou, Harman and
Cady Ammons. Harman drove in a pair and Adison "Bubba" Lee added the third RBI with a sacrifice fly.
That's how it remained until the fifth stanza when another offensive flurry put it away.
Brynn Surmont, Fanning and Igou loaded the bases with singles before Harman stepped up and cleared them all with a hit. Ammons followed with a run-scoring double and
Kennedy Lord walked it off on a two-out, two-run homer over the leftfield fence.
Harman drove in five on her two hits while Igou and Ammons contributed two hits as well. Fanning, Lord and Surmont ended with one hit apiece.
While Harman's bat was silenced in the second contest her pitching wasn't as she started and fired four strong frames, although surrendering the lead with a National Park run in the fourth.
The Lady Aggies immediately had the answer as Ammons opened with a single and two walks and a pair of Nighthawk miscues later Murray State had a 2-1 advantage.
National Park rallied to tie things on a solo home run off reliever
DrewAnn White in the sixth but once again it was Murray State's turn to answer as they took advantage of their speed off the bench.
Kaylee Carter drew a one-out walk and speedster
Lexi Meadows immediately stole second while pinch running. Two pitches later she scampered home on Lord's RBI single up the middle.
Harman returned to the pitching circle and slammed the door on the visitors, recording a pop out and two strikeouts to end it. She finished with 11 strikeouts in five frames of work.
Fanning and
Ryann Phillips chipped in two hits each to pace a limited attack that included only six total hits. Ammons and Lord had the others.
