CAMDEN, Ark – Third ranked Murray State needed a big comeback to thwart an early upset bid before rolling to a softball sweep of Southern Arkansas University Tech on Monday to remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Lady Aggies rallied from a five-run deficit to stop the Lady Rockets, 11-9, and then rode that momentum to a 13-0 run-rule triumph in game two as they improved to 41-5 overall and 18-0 in league action while pushing their winning streak to eight. SAU Tech slipped to 18-18 on the season.
Coach Aaron Mullens' club will be right back in Arkansas on Saturday for a 1 p.m. twinbill at University of Arkansas Rich Mountain before closing the season with eight games in a row at home.
In Monday's opening game, the Lady Aggies fell behind 6-1 after one inning but rebounded with seven runs in the second as they sent 13 batters to the plate to claim the lead for good.
A hit batter, error and walk loaded the bases for Murray State before a
Karsyn York RBI single began the scoring flurry.
Kennedy Lord followed with a single to drive in two more and
Bradi Harman's three-run homer over the centerfield fence put the Lady Aggies in front.
Shaylin Midgley tossed in a solo home run just two batters later.
Murray State tacked on three more in the third frame, which proved crucial, with
Courtney Grey's run-scoring double providing the big blow.
SAU Tech got the three runs back in the bottom of the stanza with both teams going scoreless over the final four innings. Harman was vital in that shutout work, fanning five hitters in her two no-hit scoreless innings of work.
Brooklyn Ellis was credited with the pitching win, yielding two earned runs and three hits in two frames.
Harman also notched three hits, including a double, home run and drove in three as Grey also contributed three hits.
Lexi Meadows chipped in a pair of hits with one apiece coming from York, Lord, Midgley and
Haili Igou.
The Lady Aggie hurlers ran the scoreless inning streak to nine while blanking the hosts in the second game.
Dara Hamlin worked three frames in the start, yielding three hits and struck out one. Harman meanwhile was dominant again in two stanzas, striking out five and allowing one hit.
Murray State scored in every inning, building the massive edge with three tallies in the first inning and another five in the second. Harman and
Mattie Richardson each homered while Midgley added a triple and three RBI for her lone hit.
Lord finished with two hits, two runs scored and two batted in. Harman, Grey, Meadows, Richardson and Bree Butler each tallied one hit.
