POPLARVILLE, MS – After building a 3-1 lead against third-ranked Pearl River Community College in Sunday afternoon's rubber game, Murray State's bats went silent as the host Wildcats rallied for a 10-3 triumph.
The Aggies baseballers slipped to 5-6 overall but return home for a Wednesday doubleheader against Northeast Texas Community College at 1 p.m. for the start of a massive 17-game homestand that lasts until March 13.
Pearl River grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza before Murray State countered with a pair in the second.
Trace Necessary walked,
Andrew Tinsley doubled and
Ethan Rone plated the first tally with a sacrifice fly.
Brennan Morgan then picked up the second RBI with a ground out.
Murray State tacked on a third run one frame later as
Gage Gilchrist walked and advanced all the way around on back-to-back singles by
Austin Haley and
Wilbert Espinal.
Tinsley and Morgan tossed in singles in the fourth but that proved to be the final Aggie hits until a Gilchrist single in the eighth inning.
Southpaw Jakob Blackwell fired four innings, yielding three runs (two earned) on three hits and three strikeouts before one frame in relief from
Kyndon Lovell in which he allowed two runs on two hits and was saddled with the pitching loss.
Nathan Darden tossed the final three stanzas, but was tagged for five runs on five hits in the eighth, striking out five and walking one.
Tinsley tallied two hits as Gilchrist, Haley, Espinal and Morgan each posted one.
