POPLARVILLE, MS – Hits were even but host Pearl River Community College cashed in eight free passes on the way to a 10-5 baseball win over the Murray State Aggies on Friday.
The Aggies slip to 4-5 on the young season but will be right back in action with another single nine-inning contest at 2 p.m. Saturday before closing out the three-game series on Sunday.
Murray State took the game's initial lead in the third inning, capitalizing on an error, walk and bunt single from
Gage Gilchrist to load the bases before
Wilbert Espinal picked up a run with a fielder's choice grounder.
Pearl River tied things with a solo run in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with a decisive six-run fourth that cashed in three free passes along with a Murray State error as the hosts needed just two hits.
The Aggies scratched two runs back in the fifth as Gilchrist doubled and scored on an Espinal single to right with
Ethan Rone driving in another on a two-out single.
The hosts tacked on three more runs in the sixth with Murray State tallying solo scores in the seventh and ninth for the final margin. Gilchrist started things again with a leadoff single in the seventh and eventually scored with
Andrew Tinsley's solo home run in the ninth adding the final run.
Gilchrist and Tinsley ended with three hits apiece with
Austin Haley, Espinal, Rone,
Brennan Morgan and
Jaxon Gless all contributing one.
Brody Roe was charged with the pitching defeat, yielding four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts in three innings.
