DENISON, Texas - An early lead slipped away in the fourth inning and so did Murray State's incredible 69-game regular season softball winning streak in a 5-2 loss to NJCAA Division I power Grayson College on Tuesday evening.
The 11
th ranked Lady Aggies drop to 12-1 while suffering their first regular season defeat since a 5-2 road loss to Connors State back on April 26, 2022. Coach Aaron Mullens' club will look to start a new streak quickly with home doubleheaders against Hutchinson Community College on Thursday and Seward County College on Friday in Tishomingo.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, Murray State broke on top in the third stanza as Brady Harman singled with two outs and
Haili Igou followed with a two-run homer over the centerfield wall.
A terrific defensive catch by centerfielder
Mattie Richardson in the bottom of the third and kept Grayson off the board on a double play.
Grayson slapped a leadoff home run in the fourth frame to cut the margin in half and then added three doubles in the inning to plate three more runs in claiming a 4-2 advantage.
Harman notched a two-out double in the fifth and
Courtney Gray chipped in a one-out single in the sixth inning to bring the tying run to the plate both times before Murray State came away empty handed.
The Lady Vikings added to the margin with a solo homer in the sixth before the Lady Aggies once again brought the tying runner to the plate in the seventh following a
Karsyn York single and walk to Igou. Both were left stranded however.
Harman and Igou notched two hits apiece to pace the Murray State seven-hit offensive charge. York, Gray and
Gracie Lute tallied one hit each.
Gray tossed the first three and two-third frames in the pitching circle, yielding four runs on eight hits, while
Brooklyn Ellis wrapped things up with two and one-third stanzas in which she allowed one run on three hits.
