ALTUS, Okla. – The Murray State College softball team blasted 11 home runs over two games today to cruise past Western Oklahoma State College on the road.
Game 1: Murray State 13, Western Okla. State 1 (5 Innings)
Murray State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning.
Jaliyah Simmons put the Aggies on the board with an RBI single to left field that scored
Brylee Fanning. Moments later,
Cady Ammons blasted a two-run home run to center field to bring home Simmons and extend the lead to 3-0. The Lady Aggies continued the first-inning surge when
Kaylee Carter launched a two-run homer to center, scoring
Lilly Wyche and giving Murray State a commanding 5-0 advantage.
The Lady Pioneers scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be their only run of the game.
The Lady Aggies added to the lead in the second inning when Ammons drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Fanning to score and making it 6-1.
Murray State kept the offense rolling in the third inning.
Avery Beauchamp connected on a two-run home run to left field, scoring Carter and pushing the lead to 8-1. Later in the inning, Fanning added a sacrifice fly that brought
Mercades Lopez home to stretch the advantage to 9-1.
The visitors from Tishomingo continued their power display in the fourth. Ammons launched her second home run of the game to make it 10-1. Beauchamp followed later in the inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Wyche to score, increasing the lead to 11-1.
Murray State sealed the run-rule victory in the fifth inning with two more long balls. Fanning crushed a solo home run to left field, and Simmons capped the scoring with a solo shot of her own to left, securing the 13-1 win.
Bella Hardeman earned the complete-game victory, striking out eight over five innings.
Game 2: Murray State 11, Western Okla. State 1 (6 Innings)
The Lady Aggies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, breaking through in the top of the second inning. A single from
Avery Beauchamp plated
Lilly Wyche to give Murray State a 1-0 lead. The momentum quickly built as
Bubba Lee launched a three-run home run to center field, scoring
Kaylee Carter and Beauchamp to extend the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning,
Brylee Fanning added another big swing with a two-run homer to right field, bringing home
Ryann Phillips and pushing the advantage to 6-0.
Murray State continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning as Fanning struck again with her second home run of the game - a solo shot to center field - to make it 7-0.
The Lady Aggies put the game firmly out of reach in the sixth inning behind more power at the plate.
Jaliyah Simmons connected on a two-run home run to right field, scoring Fanning and extending the lead to 9-0. Shortly after, Wyche added the final blow with a two-run homer of her own, driving in
Cady Ammons to cap the scoring for Murray State at 11-0.
Western Oklahoma State managed to avoid the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Lady Aggies' lead proved too much to overcome.
Carolyn Overton was electric in the circle as she tossed a complete game with five strikeouts.
Murray State returns home to take on Western Oklahoma State College for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
