TISHOMINGO, Okla. – The Murray State College softball team secured two victories over Western Oklahoma State on Saturday, powered by dominant performances in the circle.
Game 1: Murray State 8, Western Okla. State 0 (6 Innings)
Murray State came out swinging in the opener, striking first in the bottom of the first inning when
Lilly Wyche launched a two-run home run to right field, scoring
Cady Ammons.
In the fourth inning,
Brylee Fanning added to the lead with a sacrifice fly that brought home
Mercades Lopez, extending the advantage to 3-0.
The offense broke the game open in the fifth, beginning with an RBI double from
Kaylee Carter that scored Ammons and moved Wyche into scoring position. Moments later, Lopez delivered the biggest swing of the day, crushing a three-run home run to center field to push the lead to 7-0.
Lopez stayed hot in the sixth inning, collecting her fourth RBI of the game with a single that scored
Lyndee Harless and earned Murray State an 8-0 victory.
Isabella Hardeman was outstanding in the circle for the hosts as she earned the complete-game shutout, striking out 14 over six innings to earn her 22nd win on the year.
Game 2: Murray State 3, Western Okla. State 0
The Lady Aggies wasted no time carrying their momentum into game two, putting together a big first inning to take control early. A passed ball allowed
Brylee Fanning to come home for the game's first run while Ammons advanced into scoring position. Shortly after,
Lilly Wyche drew a walk to keep the pressure on. With runners in motion,
Avery Beauchamp delivered the key swing of the inning, lining a single to right field that brought home both Wyche and Ammons to give Murray State a 3-0 lead.
Murray State would keep firm control of the game thanks to great pitching and defense.
Carolyn Overton fired five scoreless innings to improve to 12-0 in the circle, while striking out six.
Keelie Treat came on in relief and got the final six outs, en route to a 3-0 victory.
With the victories, the Lady Aggies improve to 47-1 on the season and a perfect 16-0 in Region 2 play.
Murray State hosts UA Rich Mountain for a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
