TISHOMINGO, Okla. – The Murray State College softball team delivered an impressive performance at home, sweeping Hutchinson Community College in a doubleheader with a 12-0 run-rule victory in Game 1 followed by a 4-2 win in Game 2.
Game 1: Murray State 12, Hutchinson 0 (5 innings)
The Lady Aggies set the tone early, scoring in every inning and pulling away for a five-inning run-rule victory.
Murray State struck first in the bottom of the first inning when
Cady Ammons ripped a two-run single to center field, scoring
Jaliyah Simmons and
Brylee Fanning. Ammons later scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the second inning,
Bubba Lee drove in a run on a groundout that brought home Fanning, and another run scored when Ammons reached on a defensive error to push the advantage to 5-0.
The Lady Aggies added to their lead in the third when Simmons delivered a sacrifice fly to score
Lilly Wyche, making it 6-0.
Murray State broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning.
Avery Beauchamp started the rally with a sacrifice fly that plated
Lyndee Harless, while
Ryann Phillips followed with an RBI single. Fanning later reached on an error that allowed another run to score, Simmons added an RBI single, and Lee capped the inning with a two-run single to secure the 12-0 victory.
Isabella Hardeman was dominant in the circle as the sophomore picked up the complete-game shutout. Hardeman struck out six over five innings of work while only allowing two hits.
Game 2: Murray State 4, Hutchinson 2
Murray State opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Simmons lined an RBI double to right field to bring home Fanning. Later in the inning, Ammons added an RBI single to left field that scored Simmons and extended the advantage to 2-0.
The Lady Aggies added key insurance runs in the sixth inning when
Kaylee Carter launched a two-run home run to center field, scoring Harless and pushing the lead to 4-0.
Hutchinson Community College mounted a late rally in the seventh inning with two RBI singles, but Murray State held firm defensively to secure the 4-2 victory and complete the sweep.
Carolyn Overton threw 5 ⅓ scoreless innings, while striking out three.
Addisyn Wright threw an inning, while Hardeman shut the door for the final two outs of the game.
With the sweep, the Lady Aggies improve to a perfect 18-0 on the season.
The Murray State College softball team hosts Northeast Community College tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
