EUNICE, La. - The Murray State College baseball team jumped out to an early lead on Sunday afternoon against No. 10 LSU Eunice. However, the Bengals used a decisive five-run sixth and two-run seventh inning to rally past the Aggies, 7ā3, at Bengal Stadium.
The Aggies broke through in the third inning, stringing together extra-base hits to take a 3ā0 lead.
Brady Taylor worked a walk and advanced to second before
Rayner Beene lifted a triple to right field to score the game's first run.
Tanner Norman followed with an RBI double to center, and
Sean Keenen capped the inning with another double to bring Norman home, giving Murray State a three-run cushion.
Eli Ramirez continued to cruise, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the third and working out of traffic in the fourth and fifth. LSU Eunice did not score through five innings, managing just three hits against the Aggies' right-hander.
The game shifted in the bottom of the sixth. LSU Eunice loaded the bases with a walk and two hit batters before pushing across its first run on a bases-loaded walk. A two-run single tied the game, and additional hit batters and a double play allowed the Bengals to take a 5ā3 lead.
Murray State looked to answer in the seventh when Taylor singled with one out, but the Aggies were unable to mount a late rally. LSU Eunice added insurance in the bottom of the seventh and closed the door defensively to secure the win, 7-3.
Taylor finished the day with multiple hits and reached base three times, while Beene, Norman, and Keenen each delivered key extra-base hits during Murray State's three-run third inning. Ramirez turned in a strong start as the Duncan High School product fired five scoreless innings and struck out 11 Bengals.
The Aggies return to the diamond for their home opener on Feb. 6. MSC will square off against Southeast Arkansas College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
