Box Score TISHOMINGO, Okla. — The Murray State College Lady Aggies delivered a commanding 9-1 run-rule victory over ASU-Three Rivers on Wednesday afternoon, punctuated by a fifth-inning offensive explosion that sealed the win.
After building a 6-1 lead through four innings, the Aggies put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with a blistering sequence of extra-base hits. It all started with
Ryann Phillips cracking a triple to right, scoring
Kennedy Lord to extend the lead to 7-1. Next,
Brylee Fanning ripped a double to left field, scoring Phillips and advancing to third on a fielding error, making it 8-1.
Haili Igou then roped a double to center field, bringing pinch runner
Lexi Meadows home and securing the victory.
While the fifth inning capped the scoring, the offensive showcase started much earlier. In the second,
Adison Lee launched a solo home run to right field to get the Lady Aggies on the board. Later that inning,
Ryann Phillips smashed a two-run homer to center, plating Lord and giving Murray State a 3-0 lead.
The fourth inning saw more fireworks. After a double by
Kaylee Carter, and singles from
Cady Ammons and Fanning,
Bradi Harman blasted a three-run home run to left, pushing the lead to 6-0. Igou followed with a walk, and the Aggies threatened to do more damage before ASU-Three Rivers finally got out of the inning.
On the defensive side, pitchers
Alanna Routt and
Carolyn Overton combined to stifle the visiting team. Rout struck out four over three scoreless innings. Overton struck out five and gave up one run over two innings in relief.
"I was very disappointed in our performance today," said Coach Mullens. "We played very uninspired and had no sense of urgency from the start. We are failing to recognize what has made us have so much success and that is simply paying attention to the process. In order for us to continue to take the necessary steps moving forward it will be imperative that we perform tasks with intent and purpose. A reporter asked Joe DiMaggio one time, "why do you play the game so hard". He responded by saying, "maybe there is someone in the stands that has never seen me play before". We need to remember it's a "get" to and not a "have" to and stop looking ahead and stay in the present."
With the win, Murray State College advances to take on the fourth-seeded Western Oklahoma State Lady Pioneers tomorrow. The game is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Regional Park in Ardmore.
