Box Score OXFORD, Ala. — The Murray State College softball team saw their incredible season come to a heart-wrenching end Friday, dropping a nail-biting 5-4 decision to the top-seeded St. Johns River State College at the NJCAA Division II World Series.
Murray State wasted no time setting the tone in this game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brylee Fanning's leadoff walk was followed by a perfectly placed bunt single from Haili Igou. Bradi Harman then delivered a sacrifice fly to left, bringing Fanning home to open the scoring.
The Lady Aggies extended their lead in the second frame with an Avery Beauchamp double setting the table. Addison "Bubba" Lee scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryann Phillips, pushing the margin to 2-0.
St. Johns River responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run to tie up the game, 2-2.
The turning point came in the fourth. After a leadoff single and a flyout, the Vikings hit another two-run home run to take their first lead of the game. Later in the inning, St. Johns River State scored another run on a triple, and the Vikings suddenly led 5-2.
Murray State responded in the sixth inning, though. Kaylee Carter led off the frame with a towering solo homer to left center, and Kennedy Lord followed with a double. Beauchamp's second double of the day plated Lord and pulled the Lady Aggies within one. Despite putting the tying run on base, the Aggies couldn't find the equalizer.
Isabella Hardeman entered in relief and held the Vikings scoreless through the final two innings, giving the offense one last shot in the seventh. Unfortunately, the Lady Aggies could not scratch a run across as the Vikings won, 5-4.
The Murray State College softball team's season comes to an end with a remarkable 62-3 record.
