Despite what seemed to be a commanding 11-point lead late in the third period, the Murray State Lady Aggies watched Northeastern A&M scorch the nets down the stretch for a stunning 53-50 win inside Beames Fieldhouse Monday night.
The loss snapped the Lady Aggies' eight-game winning streak and left the Lady Norse alone atop the Region 2 standings with a 6-0 mark. Murray State slipped to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.
NEO struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter throughout the first three stanzas, hitting just one three pointer while the Lady Aggies were also solid on the boards in steadily building the lead. In doing so, however, Murray State lost both its primarily ball handlers (
Arissa Garcia and
Olivia Quapaw) to fouls early in the fourth stanza, which helped aid the comeback.
Murray State led 13-7 after one quarter, 25-18 at intermission and 37-28 entering the final frame.
The Lady Aggie lead was still 45-37 following a
Keshanti Gordon bucket just past the midway point of the final quarter but three consecutive Murray State turnovers narrowed the gap quickly to just two points.
Mireia Casas tossed in three free throws and Gordon contributed another basket, but two more visitor triples eventually tied the score and a conventional three-point play with 17 seconds remaining put the Lady Norse in front for good.
Mya Cotto led the scoring for the Lady Aggies with 12 points with
Jordyn McNeal adding 11 and
Ongolea Afu chipping in 10. Gordon tossed in six, Casas had five with Garcia and Quapaw wrapping up with three points apiece.
