ENID, Okla. – Top seeded Murray State rode a dominant semifinals performance to smother Rose State, 4-0, in the men's soccer NJCAA South District Championships at Advance Soccer Complex on Friday.
The ninth-ranked Aggies improved their record to 16-1 on the season, moving on to the district title tilt for a second straight year, looking to defend their championship of a year ago. They will meet Eastern State College, the team that gave them their lone loss, in the championship game on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Murray State grabbed the lead in the semifinal less than four minutes into the game when
Bryan Garcia chipped through a left-footed boot following a beautiful lead pass from
Luis Rodrigues.
Despite controlling possession throughout the opening half with the strong wind at their back, that proved to be the only Aggie goal in the first 45-minute frame. The second half was a different story however as Murray State found the back of the Raider net on three separate occasions.
A spectacular individual effort from
Alexis Lopez accounted for the initial second half goal in the game's 55
th minute as the sophomore battled through three defenders and looped a shot over the head of the Rose State keeper.
Just over five minutes later Murray State added another goal off a penalty kick with
Ryosuke Miyata smacking a left-footed blast into the left corner of the net.
The Aggies final goal came just past the midway point of the half when
Ilyan Meradji knocked in a rebound shot off a keeper save of
Matias Bauza's free kick with 19:19 left on the clock.
