WARNER, Okla – Dominating possession throughout, ninth-ranked Murray State remained unbeaten and atop the Region 2 men's soccer standings on Friday with a 6-0 road throttling of Connors State College.
The Aggies return home with their 11-0 overall record and 8-0 league mark on Sunday afternoon for a 3 p.m. battle with Rose State College.
Playing for the second time in four days, the Murray State offense took a little while to get going, managing just five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes but dented the scoreboard just 35 seconds before intermission on an
Alberto De Miguel goal off a
Gui Alves assist.
That provided a spark into halftime and the Aggies added fuel to make it an inferno coming out with an offensive onslaught after the break.
Alexis Lopez punched through the first of two second half goals (each coming via
Gustavo Ursino assists) just 70 seconds into the final 45-minute frame.
Gui Alves added to the lead in the 55
th minute off a
Bryan Garcia feed and moments later Lopez connected with the back of the net again to make it 4-0.
Philipp Federer contributed the final two tallies in a three-minute stretch from the 72
nd to 75
th minute, cashing in assists by
Thomas Weir and
Matias Bauza.
The Aggies peppered the Connors net for 13 shots on goal during the final half, needing only a pair of saves from
Francisco Pinochet thanks to another stellar effort from the defensive back line.
"I thought we played really well and dominated possession," head coach Alex Morais commented. "Connors made our life difficult at the beginning of the game playing very defensively. But once we found the back of the net before the end of the first half, we knew they were going to change their game plan.
"I am really proud of this group and very happy with their performance."
