HUTCHINSON, KANSAS- The Murray State Aggies traveled on the road to Hutchinson Community College this past weekend to participate in the Atrium Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Aggies would play #10 Hutchinson on Friday and Barton on Saturday.
VS. HUTCHINSON
The Aggies were led in scoring by
Kori Guest with 18 points off of 5-10(50%) shooting from the field, 5-9(5 from 3 and 3-3 from the free throw line. Cedric Garret added 12 and
Dyson Plumley scored eight.
Hutchinson would jump out to an early 9-2 lead, but a layup by
Andre Washington and a jumper by
Kyle Murray would cut the deficit to three with 13:46 in the half. Hutch would go on a 13-3 run to push the lead up to double digits, but a three-point jumper by Garrett, a layup by Washington and a three by guest would bring the lead to within 5 with 7:06 left in the half. Hutch Would bring the lead back up to ten with 1:29 left in the half. But the Aggies would answer back with a 7-0 run to close out the half off of a
Jaylan Thomas three, a layup by
Adam Nance and a breakaway layup by
Jerry Carraway.
The second half saw both teams traded baskets for the first few minutes, but Hutch would go on a 24-4 run to pull away from the Aggies and win the game 92-64.
The Aggies Shot 20-61 (32.8%) from the field, 9-30 (30%) from three, and 15-22 (68.2%)from the free throw line. The Blue Dragons shot 27-58(46.6%) from the field, 7-20 (35%) from three, and 81.6% from the free throw line. With the Aggies moved to 2-2 on the season.
VS BARTON
The Aggies looked to bounce back Saturday afternoon against Barton Community College.
Kyle Murray led the way for the Aggies with a career high 27 points off of a career best 11-17(64.7%) from the field.
Dyson Plumley also added in a career high 9 rebounds and a game high 3 assists for the Aggies.
Jerry Carraway also tallied 11 points in the contest.
It was a tight battle throughout as the game never saw a double-digit lead. Barton claimed its largest lead just over four minutes in the contest at 13-2. The lead dwindled away before a 7-0 spurt by Murray State gained their first lead at 21-19 with 7:51 to play. Barton assumed some momentum headed to the halftime break closing the half on a 6-0 run to enjoy an eight point 42-34 edge to intermission.
Neither team could find separation in the second half, as Barton stretched its lead to nine with 14:12 to play following Mavrick Gildyard's jumper but the Aggies were able to make a run of their own and Barton was not able to pull away.
Momentum quickly swung to the Aggies' side in less than three minutes going on a torrid 11-0 run to capture a 55-54 lead with 11:42 to play. Barton responded back with the next four on back-to-back buckets from Justin Harmon and Demarcus Morris, but again the Aggies countered back as the teams would eventually swap the lead ten times down the stretch.
Falling behind 80-77 with thirty-nine seconds left following
Kyle Murray's converted layup attempt, the Cougars would get one last chance for the equalizer but the game tying three pointer fell short giving the Aggies the victory.
The Aggies shot 32-66(48.5%) from the field, 9-27(33.3%) from three, and 7-12(58.3%) from the free throw line. With the win, the Aggies improved to 3-2 on the season and head into next week at Randall University on Monday (11/11), vs. Louisiana Christian Prep at Beames Fieldhouse on Wednesday (11/13), and at home against Grayson on Friday (11/15)
