Murray State Sports Information
The Murray State Lady Aggies managed just one goal but that was enough thanks to strong defensive effort Sunday, posting a 1-0 shutout of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in conference soccer action Sunday afternoon in Tishomingo.
With the victory, the Lady Aggies improved to 4-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league action. They will wrap up the first half of conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the road at Redlands Community College.
Despite a host of opportunities, including 13 shots on goal, Murray State only managed to find the back of the net once on a
Bridie Thompson free kick in the game's 35
th minute that blasted into the right corner.
While the Lady Aggies were having difficulty getting anything else by, it was stellar play by the defensive backline that limited the NEO opportunities. That group included
Camden Fawver,
Sofia Couvre,
Katherine Walker and
Linda Trubger along with key contributions as well from
Jasandra Joseph and
Sofia Lopez.
Sophomore
Takielia Griffiths had another strong performance in net, posting four saves, including a key stop with just 2:20 left in the contest.
"We feel very comfortable playing at home," head coach Alex Morais said. "When we play games like this that are 50-50 we always feel like we are going to find a way to put one in the back of the net, which we did today. I was really happy with effort, commitment and energy even though we were a little shorthanded and banged up.
"Our defense did a really good job protecting the spacing behind. NEO was trying to sit and get us on a counter and our midfielders did great helping out there. We kept a clean sheet, which is really important."
