Lady Aggies squeeze by Redlands on late goal

While it was far from a thing of beauty, the Murray State Lady Aggies battled through an ugly performance Sunday afternoon to topple visiting Redlands Community College, 1-0, in conference action.

The Lady Aggies peppered the Cougar goal with 27 shots, including 17 in the second half, before their final shot of the day finally found the back of the net when Uxia Varela punched a shot into the right side of the goal after a miss off the crossbar with only 3:29 remaining in the contest.

Up to that point Redlands had turned away each Murray State scoring burst, including several open shot opportunities within 10 yards away, as the Lady Aggies battled through several minor injuries and fatigue while playing for the fourth time in eight days. They dropped a rugged 1-0 battle to conference leading Seminole State on the road just 48 hours earlier.

"We didn't play well," head coach John Connor said. "We'll take the win but have a lot to fix. You don't want to make excuses, but we just didn't execute well. It's good when you don't play well and can win the game but it's not the standards we want or expect so hopefully we can come back and do better on Wednesday. Eastern is a good team and will be a tough match on the road. Hopefully we'll have a bit more energy."

Murray State's defense was up to the task again as the Lady Cougars managed only five shots on goal, four of which were saved by Jimena Guevara on the way to her 11th shutout of the season. The biggest of those came with only 10 seconds left in the first half when Guevara punched a Redlands breakaway shot attempt over the top of the goal to preserve a scoreless deadlock at intermission.

The Lady Aggies improved to 13-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in league play and on the brink of securing the number two seed in the postseason tournament. Murray State travels to Eastern Oklahoma State College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. looking to avenge their lone tie of the season.
